Parabolic Lightcloud
-UPCOMING-
At Mission Bay Knucklewharf, Parabolic Lightcloud transforms the waterfront gathering space into an immersive environment of light, movement, and shared experience. Suspended overhead rather than occupying the ground plane, the installation preserves the openness and flexibility of the site while creating a luminous canopy that enhances the area’s role as a destination for events, performances, and public gathering.
Constructed from rope made of recycled plastic bottles and embedded with more than 1,000 programmable light pixels, Parabolic Lightcloud responds interactively to human presence, illuminating in patterns inspired by the rhythm of a heartbeat. The work introduces a sense of collective pulse to the space, turning invisible human energy into a visible, ever-shifting atmosphere. Both playful and meditative, the installation encourages visitors not only to move through the space, but to feel connected within it.
At Mission Bay Knucklewharf, where innovation, recreation, and community converge along the waterfront, Parabolic Lightcloud reflects the evolving identity of the neighborhood itself. Its elevated form creates a striking visual landmark by day and a dynamic beacon by night, activating the plaza without limiting its functionality. The work reinforces the site as a place of gathering and exchange, using light, sustainability, and interactivity to transform public space into a shared civic experience.
About the Artist
Amigo & Amigo is a Sydney-based studio specialising in the creation of permanent and temporary large-scale public artworks. Since our founding in 2012, we’ve been driven by a passion for transforming everyday spaces into playful, interactive environments that spark wonder, joy, and connection.
Our journey began with a deep curiosity for how people move through public space - and how light, sound, and storytelling can be used to create shared moments of surprise and delight. What started as a small team of makers and designers has grown into a multidisciplinary studio, with in-house expertise across industrial design, electrical engineering, lighting, fabrication, and project management.
Over the past decade, we’ve successfully delivered more than 300 projects around the world, each one guided by a commitment to quality, innovation, and emotional connection. Our work is known for its ability to engage audiences through narrative and physical interaction - inviting not just observation, but participation.
Some key highlights of our career include special commissions for major institutions like The Science Museum London and Eurovision, and recurring invitations to exhibit at international light festivals such as Vivid Sydney (Australia), Lights On Stratford (Canada), i Light Singapore, River of Light (England), Lumino (Canada), Doha Light Festival (Qatar), and many others. These opportunities have allowed us to collaborate with diverse communities across continents and climates, adapting our designs to unique cultural contexts while maintaining a universal appeal.
Our approach combines cutting-edge technology with human-centered design, aiming to create artworks that are not just visually striking but deeply felt. Whether it's a glowing dandelion that reacts to touch or an interactive bonfire powered by seesaws, our works invite people of all ages to stop, engage, and rediscover the magic of public space.
Fuelled by empathy and a belief in art as a tool for connection, Amigo & Amigo has become a go-to studio for large-scale, interactive public artworks that resonate across generations and geographies.
