Big Art Loop is the largest urban sculpture trail in the world — a public art initiative bringing ambitious, large-scale sculpture into neighborhoods across San Francisco. We spark wonder, connect communities, and instill civic pride.
We invest directly in artists by placing and paying for the loan of existing large-scale works, with a strong commitment to Bay Area and emerging artists. The Loop is walkable, bikeable, and designed to give residents and visitors alike new reasons to explore the city.

Investing in Emerging Artists
52% of artists featured on Big Art Loop are emerging artists
More than half of Big Art Loop's artists are emerging artists, defined as artists with roughly 0–10 years of professional practice or limited institutional recognition. Without a gallery, a major commission, or institutional backing, most emerging artists have no path to a public stage this visible. But a placement on the Loop changes that by opening doors that don't otherwise exist: a significant artist fee, a monumental platform, and a vast public audience.

Every sculpture on the Loop is a gathering place waiting to happen. Big Art Loop activations range from intimate neighborhood moments to large-scale celebrations. Celebrating the return of the Bay Lights drew hundreds to the waterfront, while R-Evolution, Marco Cochrane's luminous 45-foot sculpture, has become an anchor of Pride weekend. Big or small, every activation is rooted in the local community: connecting neighbors, welcoming newcomers, and making public art the reason people show up.

More than a third of the artists on Big Art Loop are Bay Area-based, and for many, Big Art Loop has given them something that rarely happens: the chance to show their work at scale, on their own streets. Their work now spans the full length of the Loop, from the Embarcadero to the Bayview, the Panhandle to Lake Merced.

Every dollar goes directly to the people who make this work possible, including artists, engineers, fabricators, and a network of creative professionals who rarely get recognized for their role in public art. Yes. Every sculpture on the Loop requires ongoing care throughout its time on display, including routine inspections, cleaning, and repairs as needed. Our team works with artists, fabricators, and local partners to ensure each work remains safe and in excellent condition. Donations to installed works help cover these ongoing costs and keep the art free and accessible for everyone.
