The Measure of Air
-UPCOMING-
The Measure of Air by Mike Hansel explores the space between organic life and industry, transforming steel and bronze into a form that feels both mechanical and alive. Inspired by early scientific instruments, devices once used to quantify wind, pressure, and atmosphere, the sculpture asks what it means to measure something as intangible as air. Situated at Pier 52, the work reflects the layered history of San Francisco’s waterfront, where maritime infrastructure, shifting weather, and public movement all converge. Its looping, open form invites viewers to consider the unseen forces that shape our environment, from ocean winds to human imagination.
About the Artist
Mike Hansel is a sculptor based in Middletown, RI, whose work is deeply inspired by the oceanic environment of coastal New England. Drawing from the rhythmic movements of water and the ethereal qualities of marine life, his large-scale metal sculptures explore the tension between the organic and the industrial — rendering weightless, buoyant forms in steel and other industrial materials.
Hansel has developed a distinctive style that merges technical precision with the fluidity of natural form, and has collaborated on public installations across the country. Each piece embodies a synthesis of craftsmanship and artistry, designed to resonate visually and spatially with its surroundings.
